This language reflects the mindset of people who have a casual disregard for a right explicitly guaranteed into the U.S. Constitution.  The language, per se, is not the problem.  That is a symptom.  It is the thinking that more laws, i.e. more government, solves problems.

“gun lobby” describes defenders of the second amendment, “longtime supporter of tightening Second Amendment restrictions” describes someone, a politician in this case, of someone who wants to restrict your exercise of this right , “gun reformers” is a group of people who want to restrict your exercise of this right.
